My Story

Spotted Fish creates items that aim to bring our customers wonder and joy, and to enable them to express the things they value and care about.

I'm Pamela Gomez, the founder of Spotted Fish. The company started in Washington, DC during the pandemic. It was born of my living through difficult moments and circumstances, of my need to create items to remind myself to appreciate the positive in life and to keep my sense of humor.

Many of the items I create are intended to celebrate the beauty of nature and the world around us. Some of the other collections I'm working on have a more personal history. They reflect struggles I myself have experienced. I'd like to broaden public understanding and change people's thinking about them. My hope is that these collections will help and support others going through similar struggles.

As is common with many women, I have only come to understand and recognize important things about myself later in life. For example, I learned at the age of 56, and very much to my surprise, that I have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), accompanied by depression and anxiety. For years, my ADHD was untreated and unrecognized. I myself did not realize that I had it, and I'm grateful to those close to me who did and pointed it out.

For me, the diagnosis was a welcome and positive event. Suddenly, many of the challenges and struggles I'd faced in my life were clear to me, including the financial struggles I've experienced. And happily, today once adult ADHD is diagnosed, it is a condition that is easily treated with medication, and one that has been made manageable thanks to recent scientific breakthroughs, and a supportive and growing ADHD community.

Another aspect of myself that I've come to understand late in life is one that is very important to me to speak about openly. It is that I'm bisexual and a proud member of the LGBT community. I believe openness about this topic is especially important because of the continued work that needs to be done to broaden public understanding and end discrimination.

At Spotted Fish, we place importance on speaking up for the little guy, on working to open opportunity to all, and on fostering tolerance and respect for the dignity of friends, neighbors and the broader community. I hope you'll join me in supporting these. And I hope that knowing that you are part of a larger community of people who also value these things will be welcome.
